To make up for that from release 2008a you will need to "activate" 
Matlab first.   From their email:

> Beginning with Release 2008a, The MathWorks will require activation
> of all software in the MATLAB and Simulink product families.
> Activation is a secure process that verifies licensed use of
> MathWorks products and reduces unauthorized use of software.
> Products released prior to R2008a do not require activation.
