Might be a bad cable; but, in this case, I think that this is not the cause:
when I use this cable to connect other computer to this router (an old
Pentium II 300 with the same RedHat 8.0) I have no errors; and when I boot
the portable using Windows XP I have a perfect connection to the same router
using this cable.

[root@Quevedo netdrivers]# mii-diag --watch
Using the default interface 'eth0'.
Basic registers of MII PHY #24:  3000 782d 0041 6800 05e1 0021 0004 2001.
 Basic mode control register 0x3000: Auto-negotiation enabled.
 You have link beat, and everything is working OK.
 Your link partner is generating 10baseT link beat (no autonegotiation).
   End of basic transceiver information.

Monitoring the MII transceiver status.
20:19:08.456 Baseline value of MII BMSR (basic mode status register) is
782d.

I don't get any more information from the program (executed while pinging
10.0.0.1).
