I tried to do it without any options, and it failed with exactly the same
error. I tried using options=8, because your page
(cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/vortex.html) says that 8 is: "3c905B
internal transceiver (the correct transceiver type on the Cyclone)".
(Documentation error?)

I'm downloading mii-diag right now; also, I'm going to download the 0.99L
version of the driver from your website and drop that in if mii-diag
doesn't do much good.
