0.99F: full duplex problem

Hello,

I have a configuration with 2 3Com 3c905 cards and an TP cable
(CAT5, twisted ).

I load the module 3c59x.o with the parameters debug=2 full_duplex=1

I notice that in the case where one of the sides is turned off or
disconnected the version "3c59x.c:v0.99F 8/7/98 Donald Becker" of
Linux 2.1.120pre3 does not set full duplex:

Sep 3 19:23:27 zahn vmunix: Internal config register is 6302d8, transceivers 0xe040.
Sep  3 19:23:27 zahn vmunix:   8K word-wide RAM 3:5 Rx:Tx split, MII interface.
Sep 3 19:23:27 zahn vmunix: MII transceiver found at address 24, status 7849.
Sep 3 19:23:27 zahn vmunix: Enabling bus-master transmits and whole-frame receives.
Sep  3 19:23:27 zahn vmunix: eth0: MII #24 status 7849, link partner capability 0000, setting half-duplex.
Sep  3 19:23:27 zahn vmunix: eth0: vortex_open() InternalConfig 006302d8.
Sep  3 19:23:27 zahn vmunix: eth0: vortex_open() irq 17 medi

In contrast to this the version 0.99E does always set full dulpex mode,
at least it claims to do this.

Is this a bug and is there a possible fix for that ?

Before I have seen the messages in the syslog I noticed sometimes
unusual packet loss values, like 30% and maybe this is
an explaination for it? Normally I have 0% packet loss.

Best regards
  Steffen
