SMC EtherPower II

I have a SMC9432TX installed and have a couple of strange things
happening here.
I have tried using it as a module and compiled into the kernel and
I get different ping times and some errors when I have it compiled
into the kernel.

These specs below are all using it compiled into the kernel, however
when I use it as a module I see no errors with ifconfig but the ping
times are 4 times slower. This is using a redhat 6.0 system with
linux-2.2.11 kernel.

I am basicly at present using a 10baseT network with five machines
connected to a hub, which is connected to a router.

I see ping times from the SMC to another machine of:
[ray@picard:/home/ray]/% ping ray
PING ray.ray.clark.net (207.97.67.226) from 207.97.67.227 : 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 207.97.67.226: icmp_seq=0 ttl=255 time=3.3 ms
64 bytes from 207.97.67.226: icmp_seq=1 ttl=255 time=1.1 ms
64 bytes from 207.97.67.226: icmp_seq=2 ttl=255 time=1.1 ms
64 bytes from 207.97.67.226: icmp_seq=3 ttl=255 time=1.1 ms
64 bytes from 207.97.67.226: icmp_seq=4 ttl=255 time=1.1 ms

And ifconfig:

eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:E0:29:08:5C:1D
          inet addr:207.97.67.227 Bcast:207.97.67.239 Mask:255.255.255.240
UP BROADCAST RUNNING PROMISC MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
          RX packets:32579 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:7
          TX packets:65103 errors:32 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:64
          collisions:43 txqueuelen:100
          Interrupt:11 Base address:0x9100

And with the diagnostic I see:

[ray@picard:/home/ray/cprograms]/% ./mii-diag
Using the default interface 'eth0'.
Basic registers of MII PHY #3: 1000 782d 0181 4401 01e1 0021 0000 ffff.
Basic mode control register 0x1000: Auto-negotiation enabled.
You have link beat, and everything is working OK.
Your link partner is generating 10baseT link beat.

Any suggestions please on what I might have wrong here or how to
troubleshoot this problem, and has anyone else noted this with this card?

Sorry this is so long but I wanted to state all the things I see.

Thanks so much,
