[Beowulf] "Code" vs. "Codes"

I can't stand it any longer, I've got to make
my "contribution" to this discussion.
Eric Moore cites the text
  > a list of all codes and cyphers in use
For this reason, I always thought that
using "code" for programs was considered sloppy jargon
and that in a formal document or article one should
write "computer program" rather than "code".
