[vortex] High Carrier count

I am experiencing a high carrier count without any
other errors. Here is lspci output: 00:10.0 Ethernet
controller: 3Com Corporation 3c905C-TX [Fast
Etherlink] (rev 74)

ifconfig output:

UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
          RX packets:56762 errors:0 dropped:0
overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:43955 errors:0 dropped:0
overruns:0 carrier:31213
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
          RX bytes:79859000 (76.1 MiB) TX
bytes:3340400 (3.1 MiB)
          Interrupt:10 Base address:0x7c00

I am seeing this on all 2.4 kernels and have switched
cables and switch ports. Is it safe to say this is a
hardware problem? Also does carrier mean the same
thing as back in the old 9600 baud days?

Thanks
