Err, read the documentation of your distribution. Basically something
like:

alias eth0 3c59x

must be put in /etc/modules.conf, but this is usually done at install 
time or later on by tools such as kudzu or some network setup tool.
As you started on compiling a driver, I thought that you've already passed 
through these basic steps which would have been needed for 3c90x anyway...
