It can work either way: one big switch or two smaller switches. The idea 
is to separate the two (or more) NICs from one computer such that they 
don't see each other (as they both have the same MAC address).

Although my memory is fuzzy about these details, I only have 3Com cards in 
the clusters here, so I wasn't interested (or able) to test for others. 
However, my claim was just that it compiled (it didn't for you...)
not that it worked !
