AFAIK, the card is configured (from the factory) for autonegotiation. If
the default media type is changed, the Linux driver will honour it. So it
seems like the card was set to 10baseT using f.e. the DOS utility
delivered by 3Com; probably the Windows driver didn't honour it.
You can use either the DOS utility (provided you can boot DOS/Windows) or
vortex-diag (be sure to make a backup first!) to rewrite the default
media setting.

I neglected completely that this situation can occur. I appologize!
