It did change exactly at rev4 to rev4.1, IIRC. As to whether its useful 
information is another story altogether.

This may be true for Centaur, but perhaps could be applied to other tulip 
clones which require special tweaks or manual workarounds.

Vendors populating PCI subsystem IDs of any hardware seems very rare, even 
though it would be immensely helpful :-/

But arent there some tulip clones which require special tweaks or 
workarounds, especially some multiport cards? If it were possible to 
positively identify them through MAC/subsystem ID or a combination, it 
might be useful.
