YAPT (Yet Another Problem with Tulip) (fwd)

When compiling  tulip in the kernel (2.2.12) (and i need it in the kernel
cause i boot over NFS) and booting the follwoing happens:

It detects 7 eths when in fact i have one and no one would work!

Board is a asus P2B D/P2B-DS

What can be done in this case?
