I figured it out, sorry to have bothered anyone.

for the curious:

My SMC 100baseT card was actually a 10BaseT card (sigh.)
My hub is not a 10/100 baseT but a pure 100baseT product.

I scrounged an Intel EtherExpress100 and things are MUCH better.
