No login?

Hi!

I was trying to create a small linux system on a 8MB partition. I
created the directories, copied the files etc, but I cannot login. I get
rejected every time with the message

login[<some-number-here>]: invalid passowrd for 'UNKNOWN' on 'tty1'

Invalid login.

What's going on? I'm sure I have correct passwd, shadow, group, gshadow
and inittab.

I would appreciate *any* help, because this issue is driving me mad for
several days now... :(
