Well, I still try to:

make make dep make bzImage, make modules make modules_install (I wanted the
4-cdrom changer to run) and I get on bootup:

after sending BOOTP and RARP requests......unable to handle kernel paging
request at virtual address 00d0030.....lots of computerese ....Aiee,
killing interrupt handler.

I dont think that is 2.2.9 per se.  2.2.5 runs fine. Am I  doin sumpin
wrong in make menuconfig?

I am not knowledgeable enough to fix that.  Somebody?
