[realtek] rtl8139 locks for largetransfers

I am using the rtl8139 card on my cluster with RH6.2 installed(kernl
2.2.14).
When i try large file transfers(of the order of 100 MB) via pvfs or any
large
data transfer based on standard libraries like PVM the whole n/w freezes.
I tried the latest version of rtl driver availabel on the scyld site.
But the same result.I even tried the kernel version 2.4.4.
Still no change. I wrote a program to ping pong continusly in incrimental
order of size(incriments of one byte) based on PVM .
As the packed data size increased and the n/w got flooding the n/w crashed.
It would recover if i did eth0 down and then up.
But why should the card fail to function for large transfers?
Is this a problem with the driver or the card(h/w)?
Please help me figure out whats wrong!
