[eepro100] e100 problem

hi,

i am running a dumb terminal [redhat LINUX 7.1 kernel 2.4.2-2] that is to 
access a remote XDM based applications server. i can obtain the login prompt 
from the server but whenever it starts to load up KDE it freezes halfway 
through. after doing CTRL-ALT-F2 i keep getting periodic messages that are 
something like 'e100_wait_cmd_failed: Wait failed smb cmd_0xf0'. i am 
guessing this is why the KDE login is freezing. the driver is specified in 
/etc/modules.cong as e100.
it's using the intel(R) PRO/100 VE onboard LAN connection.
i am fairly new to LINUX and any help you can be would be very greatly 
appreciated,
