A few notes:

If you think you're having multicast storming problems, the simplest way
to test if the multicast filter limit thing will help is to go to the
machine's console and type (as root):

	ifconfig eth0 promisc

If the storm stops, that's where your problem is. Nice thing is you can
do this test without reboot.

Another type of problem which commonly happens is the failure of the
switch and Ethernet NIC card to auto-negotiate. In theory, and often in
practice, the switch and NIC are supposed to figure out if they're
running 10Mbps or 100Mbps, and whether they're full or half duplex.
Cisco has had some trouble with some of their switches failing to
negotiate the half/full duplex, even when two of their switches are
connected together. If you suspect this may be the type of problem
you're having, it's easy to test/diagnose. Go into config mode on the
Catalyst, and force the port you're using to be the duplex and speed you
want, and see if that helps. You might have to try forcing to half
duplex and see if the two will talk that way, even if you really wanted
full duplex. YMMV.
