Excessive CRC/alignment errors

Hardware: PentiumPro200 w/ eepro100b (uniprocessor)
OS: up to Linux 2.0.37
eepro100: 0.32 up to 1.09c

After switching the 100FD connection of that computer to a HP ProCurve 2424M
I get many

FFI: port 4-Excessive CRC/alignment errors. See help.

on the switch side and many

kernel: eth0: Transmit timed out: status 0050 0000 at 3951/3965 command 000c0000.
kernel: eth0: Trying to restart the transmitter...

on the linux side.

After switching back to my old Lantronix LSW8F (the old dumb store-and-forward
switch) all problems disappeared.

Could there be a timing problem?
