There are also NUMA nodes which, amongst others,
the Linux kernel uses.  For AMD systems these
essentially map onto sockets.

For example on a dual socket, quad core Barcelona:

[root at tango001 node]# pwd
/sys/devices/system/node

[root at tango001 node]# ls -F
has_cpu  has_normal_memory  node0/  node1/  online  possible

[root at tango001 node]# cd node1

[root at tango001 node1]# ls
cpu4  cpu6  cpulist  distance  numastat
cpu5  cpu7  cpumap   meminfo   scan_unevictable_pages

[root at tango001 node1]# cat distance
20 10
