With regard to booting from RAID, with software RAID some partitions can be RAID 6 and others RAID 1. The boot information can go on a small partition labeled /boot in RAID 1. On a machine that had a two-channel Adaptec controller -- if I remember correctly -- disks from both channels were used together in RAID 5 yet the number of Master Boot Records was 2, one for each channel. There is a way to write the same MBR for each channel, but I don't trust my memory to explain how. It might seem rather complex -- or by now it might be a simple grub option -- in any case you can have each MBR go to the /boot partition that is on the same disk. For this controller it was necessary to enter the BIOS during boot-up to change the choice of which channel to read the MBR if one of the two was on a failed disk.
