The "Helmer" <http://helmer.sfe.se/> minicluster uses blender, and appears to perform well. Also, Maya's 'muster' engine runs under Linux, and quite successfully. We use it in a mixed environment, where the render pool consists of both Windows workstations and Linux cluster nodes. Note, though, that like other commercial 3D products, Maya is expensive, and may not be suitable for a student project. -- Greg Byshenk
