I suppose, too, if you're doing heavy duty HPC, you'd be doing it on a CDC, 
with 6bit characters and 60 bit words.  Not enough room left for lower case 
after sucking up 36 characters for 0-9 and A-Z.

Of course  you have to shout.  There's all the noise from the line printer 
and the cooling fans.
