er... sort of.

Don't try that in a main program.  Subroutines, sure.

I remember many stressf^H^H^H^H^H^Hfun filled hours calling this 
function named malloc ... and having to make that work right on every 
platform we ran on (5 or 6 as I remember).

No punchcards, just a grad student, with too much coffee and vi.  Talk 
about a recipe for disaster ...
