you might want to check out http://bofh.be/clusterknoppix/ That will do the virtual SMP for you but I am not sure about MPI. http://bccd.cs.uni.edu/ does MPI for sure. For the OS and Application seperation I would think that is a feature of high end software/hardware combinations.
