they also just use network boot ( pxe ) to install their generic server
and google patches on top of redhat ( last i heard )... 

and its tweeked at the last minute to become a db frontend or webserver
frontend when its deployed 

and if the machines die... they leave it there .... its not fixed 
( they've got thousands of dead boxes sitting there

and they use high speed dark fiber to transfer data between their
datacenters
( say between sf, ny, dalla ... forgot the exact cities its located in )


--- and thought the largest "cluster" was the "seti network" ( search for
    extraterrestial screeen saver thingie )  and also distributed.net
