I ran across an interesting white paper written by someone at Hotmail discussing a change from FreeBSD to Win2000 for their servers. It's an interesting discussion of many of the system administration and configuration management issues that arise. Interestingly, it seems that one of the big problems is the "desktop GUI" centric nature of many of the MS tools, which don't lend themselves to scripting and so forth. http://securityoffice.softimage.net/hotmail.html The paper has much discussion of the problems of keeping system images consistent, rolling out updates, etc., all of which is relevant to cluster computing.
