I have some of these boxes. To get IDE up to speed I had to use a vendor
modified kernel available at:
http://www.aslab.com

With the patch hdparm gives me 45 Mb/s throughput, without only 3 Mb/s.

Furthermore for serious computing you want to turn off hyperthreading in
the bios.
