You should be using the vortex at scyld.com list for questions about the
3Com Vortex/Hurricane/Cylcone/etc. Ethernet adapters.

Nothing.  As in "less than you are doing now".

Overriding the transceiver setting to an one invalid for your specific
board will cause the transceiver to work at 10baseT speed only.  There
is a check for this misconfiguration in current driver versions, but
older drivers would configure the NIC as specified.
