you might look at something like:

raw video is enough of a bandwidth hog that someone is likely not to try
and use a cluster if trying to process it in real time (ie from a live
source)... that's something left to a uniprocessor or multiprocessor
machine if done in software... if you're working with large numbers of
discrete blocks of video though it's a task well suited to cluster of
computers... we have used a pile of boxes with real-producer pro in order
to encode 80Kb/s and 300Kb/s real files from mpeg-1 source files. It take
about five seconds for real-producer to encode 1 second of mpeg
video/audio as 80Kb/s real file at the highest quality setting so you can
imagine a significant speedup from runnig these things in parallel...
