Great advice coming to you. You now know how to handle
the exports. Here are my $0.02:
(1) If you are firewalled off from the world, you can
implement NIS wich is easy-tho' not secure.
(2) I would not export /home, but to place home dirs
where the file system is more robust (I like raid and
am also known for having trust issues.)
(3) learn how to set up autofs.
