Regarding the questions about ssh/tty clients:

(1) I think the main advantage of putty is that its so lightweight. If I'm
visiting my inlaws and need to check on my cluster (200 miles away), I can
download putty and run it right from the desktop. I don't need
administrator access to install it, I don't need to download 100MB from a
buggy server - its fast and light, and I don't have to pay any money for it.

(2) All of you windows guys must have tried cygwin at least once. Although
it takes a while to install and although the font selection is pretty
terrible, you must admit that it is pretty convenient for mimicking general
*nix functionality.

On an almost-related vein, the wife wants a new laptop. Have any of you
owned one of the $500 specials that they sell at Walmart/newegg? I figure
if its running XP for things like organizing photos and writing email, there
isn't much need for the latest and greatest.

regards,

NT
