[Beowulf] static pvm library won't link anymore

It isn't that, it's that the 3.4.5 (and 3.4.4 I assume) use forms
of C that gcc 4.1.x compiles are not happy with.  Here's one

I've been working through the patches at the end of that thread, but
there still seem to be issues.
