Nothing says you must use MPI. PVM was around on clusters years and years ago, and many people still prefer it. Some people are using OpenMosix and shared mem on small clusters. A software maniac might code a parallel application in raw tcp/ip. I knew a guy who built a parallel Mandelbrot appliance using raw IPX on DOS in high school. Beowulf is nothing more than using networked commodity-based hardware to collectively solve large, parallel computational problems. -- Geoffrey D. Jacobs
