I have helped my customers build Windows clusters (one cluster with
thousands of nodes) using xCAT. The clusters AFAIK are for batch
applications only.

This document (http://xcat.org/doc/windows-HOWTO.html) describes how to
install Windows with support for VNC for remote GUI, sshd for remote
ssh/scp/rsync, and a serial port getty (yes you can login to Windows via a
serial port/terminal server and get a bash prompt). There is also some help
with auto generating new SIDs.

This document (http://xcat.org/doc/image-HOWTO.html) describes how to use
xCAT with partimage to install the nodes.

The above is not really best practices (not sure if there are any) or a
dummies guide, but may give you a start or some ideas.
