The language will matter at least as much as your choice of CPU, switch brand, networking topology and so on, to the total performance of your computational "solution" - so yes, I hope you are the only one failing to see its relevance :) I, like most others probably, don't have time to keep up to date on all languages in practical use today. I most likely don't even *know* about all languages in practical use today. And I just love to see examples like the word-count program in Java (I was surprised at that one!), C++ (I knew that one), and Fortran (I was happy to see that Fortran has evolved somewhat since my F77+extensions days). I was even corrected on a C optimization issue (thanks Greg!). I learnt something useful today :) The word-count example is in essence not so different from your average factorization problem - languages abilities, compiler abilities, optimization possibilities, raw code speed... these are parameters that are all relevant to many 'wulfers. The list is wery wide in it's subjects; everything from AC wiring to SMP scalability, over Scyld installation problems to switch performance measurements is regularly being discussed. I for one do not feel that a language discussion is the least bit off topic. After all, we do code in languages :) (well, except for the F...... people /me runs ;) -- ................................................................ : jakob at unthought.net : And I see the elder races, : :.........................: putrid forms of man : : Jakob Østergaard : See him rise and claim the earth, : : OZ9ABN : his downfall is at hand. : :.........................:............{Konkhra}...............:
